John Goetz: Dynamic Explorations in Abstract Figuration
John Goetz’s canvases pulsate with kinetic energy—figures bend, walk, run, kick, spin, strut, whirl, and dance across richly textured surfaces. His distinctive abstract figures emerge through vibrant streaks of color and expressive gestural lines, often appearing in pairs or trios against sumptuous chromatic backgrounds created through a complex layering of oil, acrylic, and encaustic.
In some works, like “Europa,” Goetz offers more defined representations—perhaps two women in bathing attire strolling seaside or leaving exercise. These more literal interpretations naturally direct viewers toward narrative questions about the subjects rather than their emotional essence.
However, Goetz achieves greater emotional resonance when his figures remain suggestive rather than explicit. “Red DeVille” exemplifies this approach, presenting three predominantly black forms against a red background. Each figure consists of minimal elements—a color smear suggesting a torso, simple marks implying limb movement—yet each radiates vitality, encircled by pale yellow halos that energize the composition. The powerful black forms surge through the passionate red space, creating a primal emotional landscape tempered by the background’s yellow undertones that introduce a subtle joyfulness to the exuberant scene.
While Goetz typically employs warm palettes, “Iceland” presents a fascinating exception with its cool blue background. Here, the predominantly white and pale pink figures—whose orientation remains deliberately ambiguous—seem to recede from the viewer and each other. Despite their synchronized movement, the composition evokes a profound sense of isolation and spatial mystery.
“Metropolitan,” the darkest piece in the collection, features figures appearing to retreat into an ominous black background. Unlike most of Goetz’s works where figures maintain separation, these three overlap in close proximity, suggesting an instinctual understanding of collective security—as if each intuitively seeks reassurance through connection with others.
Whether isolated or congregated, Goetz’s elemental figures, stripped of external adornment, consistently provoke emotional responses. His masterful technique captures both unbridled energy and nuanced emotional complexity, ultimately presenting a profound visual exploration of the human psyche.
